Edwin G. "Ed" Schuller (born January 11, 1955 in New York City ) is an American jazz bassist and composer.

Live and act

He is the eldest son of the composer Gunther Schuller and studied music theory, clarinet and bass with David Levenson of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra (1970–72) and bass with Larry Wolf of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (1972–74). After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music , he toured Europe with the bands of Paul Motian , Tim Berne , Eric Watson , Marty Cook , Jim Pepper , Mal Waldron , Perry Robinson , Nicolas Simion , Frank Lacy and Uli Lenz. In the USA he played with Pat Martino , Jaki Byard , Lee Konitz , Clark Terry , Julius Hemphill , Karl Berger , Mat Maneri , Ray Anderson and others. As a band leader, he has recorded several CDs since 1991. Occasionally he works with his brother, the drummer George Schuller (for example with Burton Greene or in the band The Schulldogs with Herb Robertson and Gebhard Ullmann ). With Arto Tunçboyacıyan and Ara Dinkjian he was a founding member of the ethno jazz band Night Ark .

Schuller plays in a dance-like manner. Since 1975 he has recorded well over 60 records and CDs and has participated in numerous highly acclaimed ensembles and projects, such as the world premiere of Charles Mingus ' Epitaph , Joe Lovano's Rush Hour or Sonic Temples in the Ran Blake Trio (2001).

In addition to his work as a double bass player, Schuller composed over 50 works for different ensembles and musical contexts. He taught at Berklee College of Music and headed the jazz department at the Schweitzer Institute in Sandpoint , Idaho ; For four years he worked as a lecturer for double bass at the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . In 1996 he was awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education for outstanding achievements as a jazz pedagogue.
