Sandpoint is a city in the so-called Idaho Panhandle in the north of the US state Idaho . In 2000 the city had 6,835 inhabitants. Sandpoint belongs to Bonner County , whose county seat the city holds. Sandpoint is the birthplace of Sarah Palin , who ran alongside John McCain for Vice President in the 2008 US presidential election.

history

The Flathead , especially the Kalispel and the Kootenai, set up their summer villages on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille , where they fished, made baskets out of cedar trees and picked berries before they migrated to their winter quarters in what is now Montana or Washington today . This annually recurring hike ended before the early 1930s.

During the 1880s, the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad brought European and Chinese settlers to the area.

In August 1888, the then twenty-nine-year-old writer and civil employee Theodore Roosevelt visited Sandpoint on a hunting trip to the Selkirk Mountains and described this stay. Roosevelt described "Sand Point" as rough and dull.

Sandpoint was registered as a City in 1898 .

Logging and railroad construction fueled the town's economy for nearly a decade when loggers came to Idaho from the already largely deforested Great Lakes region . Various companies have been operating in the region since 1896, others have since ceased operations. The best known of these companies was the "Humbird Lumber Company", which was active from 1900 to around 1944. The logging companies bought the land from the railway company and set up large sawmills in Sandpoint and neighboring Kootenai. Branch lines that belonged to these logging companies extended into side valleys, such as Grouse Creek or Gold Creek . Although the trees were not completely cut down in the area, Humbird Lumber suffered from low prices due to the global economic crisis and finally had to stop the activity.

Agriculture and grazing became the third most important economic factor before Lake Pend Oreille was discovered as a destination for sport and recreational anglers in the 1950s. During the Second World War, the local economy experienced a boom through the Farragut Naval Station on the southwest end of Lake Pend Oreille, where the United States Navy maintained a training center.

The opening of the tourist area on Schweitzer Mountain in 1963 made the area a year-round travel destination. The beauty of the surrounding Selkirk and Cabinet Mountains and Lake Pend Oreille itself have made Sandpoint popular with anglers, water sports enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, horse riders and skiers.

In August 2006 the first international film festival took place in Sandpoint. Independent films were shown on the beach and in the historic Panida Theater and accompanying discussions and workshops were held. It was the first film festival in the interior Northwest of the United States.
