Sand Point or Qagun Tayagungin is a place with 893 inhabitants on Popof Island in the Aleutians East Borough in the state of Alaska in the United States of America and at the same time the administrative seat of the borough . The place was founded in 1898 as a trading post and fishing village and initially mostly inhabited by Unangan and Scandinavians , today almost half of the inhabitants are from Aleutians , mostly from the Qagan Tayagungin tribe . From an economic point of view, fishing is still of enormous importance today. Sand Point is constituted as a city .

The place is on Popof Island, one of the Shumagin Islands off the Alaska Peninsula in the Gulf of Alaska . The Port of Sand Points is one of the ports on the Alaska Marine Highway . Sand Point's geographic coordinates are 55 ° 20 ′ N , 160 ° 30 ′ W (55.336593, −160.493234). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 75.0 km² , of which 20.2 km² is land and 54.8 km² (= 73.05%) is water.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 952 people in 229 households and 155 families lived here. The population density is 47.1 inhabitants per km². The racial the population is composed of 27.73% White, 1.47% African American , 42.33% Native American , 23.21% Asian , 0.32% Pacific Islander, 2.21% other races and 2.72% are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race is 13.55% of the population .
Of the 229 households, 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% of whom were married couples living together, 15.7% were single mothers, and 31.9% were non-families. 25.8% consisted of single households and 3.9% had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.17.
20.4% of the population were under 18 years old. 8.6% between 18 and 24 years old, 41.5% between 25 and 44 years old, 26.3% between 45 and 64 years, and 3.3% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 165.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 181.8 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 55,417, and the median income for a family was $ 58,000. Males had a median income of $ 20,000 versus $ 22,500 for women.
