history
Before the arrival of the Russian fur hunters in Alaska in the late 18th century, there was a Kaniagmuit Indian settlement called Kaluak on the site of the present-day town. Chignik itself was founded at the end of the 19th century as a fishing port and for canning. Seasonal workers were brought from San Francisco to Chignik on the Star of Alaska sailing ship .
A post office was opened in 1901. From 1899 to 1915, coal was mined in the Chignik region. The place is now connected to the ferry system of the Alaska Marine Highway . In the Alutiiq language, the name of the place means something like " big wind ".
