Alutiiq (also Sugpiaq or Sugcestun ) is the name of a language that is similar to the Yupik language and is spoken in the region around Bethel in southwestern Alaska . It is also the name of the Alutiiq indigenous tribe in Alaska. A distinction is made between two dialects: the Koniag dialect is spoken on the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island , while the Chugach dialect is spoken on the Kenai Peninsula and on Prince William Sound . Currently trying the 3000 Alutiiqsto speak more of their language again to save them from extinction. Alutiiq is currently only spoken by around 400 people.
