Bethel is a city in the US state of Alaska on the Kuskokwim River in the Bethel Census Area and is located in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge . At the 2010 US census , the population was 6,080. The United States Census Bureau estimates the population as of July 1, 2017 at 6,456. It is the administrative center for the 56 settlements in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta .
history
At the site of today's Bethel there was a Yupik settlement called Mamterillermiut . At the end of the 19th century, the Alaska Commercial Company established a trading post . In 1880 the place had 41 inhabitants. In 1885 a Christian mission was established there by the Moravian Church . The missionaries moved the site to the west side of the Kuskokwim River. In 1905 a post office opened.
Infrastructure
Bethel Airport is state-owned and served by six passenger and five cargo airlines. In terms of the number of flights, Bethel Airport is the third largest in Alaska.
There are about 16 miles of official roads in Bethel that are not connected to a national road network.
