history
The history of Ketchikan began in 1883 when a salmon processing factory was built here. In the early 1900s, a canning factory was also opened, in which salmon was bottled, and a department store. The parish was officially registered in 1900; at that time Ketchikan had about 800 inhabitants.
With the start of mining in the area, Ketchikan became an important trading center. In the Creek Street one was red light district , where at times up to thirty brothels were operated simultaneously and in which large portions of the salaries of the miners were reissued.
With the decline of mining, the economic focus shifted to industrial fishing and the extraction of timber . In the meantime, however, the latter has largely become meaningless again.
tourism
Cruise ships call at Ketchikan . The passengers of the ships visit the nearby village of Saxman with the totem poles erected there , which can also be seen in Totem Bight State Park and the Totem Heritage Center . Some of the objects were made by the native Indians as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) set up by the Roosevelt government in the 1930s .
