Unalaska is a city on the Aleutian -Insel Unalaska Iceland in the US state of Alaska . The port area is located on the neighboring island of Amaknak and is called the Dutch Harbor . Dutch Harbor is within the metropolitan area of Unalaska and is connected to the city by the nearly 200 meter long South Channel Bridge .
The Russian fur trade reached Unalaska when Stepan Glotov landed with his crew on August 1, 1759.
The city of Unalaska was named after the island of the same name. Dutch Harbor (dt. Dutch Harbor ) was named by the Russians so because they believed that a Dutch vessel was the first European ship that would reach the port.
Unalaska Airport is located two kilometers northeast of the city .
history
In 1768 Unalaska became a Russian trading port for the fur packaging industry. In 1825 the Russian Orthodox Church of the Resurrection was built under the priest Innokenti Weniaminow . With the help of locals, the later first Orthodox bishop of the New World created the first Alëutic writing system and translated passages from the Bible into Alëutic . At that time (1830-1840) only 200-400 Aleutians lived in Unalaska.
1880, after the purchase of Alaska by the United States , which opened Methodist Church , a school , a hospital and an orphanage in Unalaska.
In early June 1942, the US military facilities in the city and in the port were attacked by Japanese aircraft .
The current population of Unalaska is predominantly non-Aleut.
The region's economy is characterized by fishing and processing . In 2018, the Dutch Harbor was the most important fishing port in the United States based on the weight (350,000 t) of fish and seafood discharged here . When it comes to the value of goods, it ranks third.
