Erik Mattias Andersson (born March 29, 1978 in Malmö ) is a former Swedish handball goalkeeper .
Career
Andersson started playing handball at Ystads IF HF . In his youth he was coached by his father Thomas , who played for the IFK Malmö handball team in the 1970s . Mattias first appeared in the Elitserien at the age of 17 . In 1999 he joined HK Drott . In April 2001 he moved to FC Barcelona to represent the injured goalkeeper David Barrufet . In the summer of 2001 he signed a contract with the German Bundesliga club THW Kiel . There he was second goalkeeper behind Henning Fritz and later Thierry Omeyer . He did not extend his contract with THW, which expired in 2008, and switched to TV Großwallstadt . For the 2011/12 season, Andersson moved to SG Flensburg-Handewitt and received a contract there until 2013, which was extended to 2017. In 2014 he won the Champions League with Flensburg-Handewitt . After Andersson won the German championship in 2018, he ended his career.
He played 150 times for the Swedish national team. He won the title at the European Championships in Croatia in 2000 . He was also in the squad for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , but was not used there. He also played at the 2010 European Championship . Andersson won the silver medal with Sweden at the 2012 Olympic Games in London . He also took part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
From the summer of 2018, Andersson worked as a goalkeeping coach for the Austrian national team and at THW Kiel. Since February 1, 2020, he has been the head goalkeeping coach at the German Handball Federation.
