After graduating from school, he received a sports scholarship from the University of Idaho and played from 1955 to 1958 for the local football team , the Idaho Vandals , as a guard and kicker. For his achievements as a track and field athlete and football player, Kramer has received several awards from his college .

Professional career

Gerald Kramer was drafted 39th in the fourth round by the Green Bay Packers in 1958 . His rookie year with the team from Green Bay was not very successful, the Packers could only win one of twelve games. In 1959, the former assistant coach of the New York Giants Vince Lombardi took over the coaching office for the team from Wisconsin . The Packers should then develop into a top team in the NFL. Kramer was used by Lombardi as a guard to protect quarterback Bart Starr and as a pre-blocker by running back Paul Hornung . After the Packers had lost the 1960 NFL final against the Philadelphia Eagles 17:13, Kramer and his team won his first NFL title in 1961 . The Packers clearly beat the Giants 37-0 in the NFL final.

The following year, Kramer was also used as the team's kicker. Again the Packers managed to move into the NFL final, where they met the Giants again. Kramer contributed three field goals to the 16: 7 victory of his team.

The year 1964 was not very successful for Jerry Kramer personally. Due to an injury, he could only play two games. In 1965 he won his third title for it. This time the Cleveland Browns lost to the Packers in the championship game with 23:12. The next two game years should end for Kramer with winning the NFL title. In 1966, Kramer's team beat the Dallas Cowboys 34:27 in the final, and in 1967 the Cowboys were again losers in the NFL final, which would go down in football history as the Ice Bowl . Kramer played a key role in his team's 21:17 victory over the Dallas team . Under the most adverse circumstances, the game was played at −25 degrees Celsius and the playing surface was covered with ice, the Packers were 17:14 behind until shortly before the end of the game. A few seconds later, Bart Starr surprisingly started a run with Jerry Kramer and Ken Bowman as pre-blockers and was able to carry the ball to the decisive touchdown in the end zone of the cowboys. Both games meant that Kramer's team entered the AFL-NFL World Championship Game . The championship game between the still separate leagues American Football League (AFL) and the NFL was later to be renamed the Super Bowl . In Super Bowl I , the Packers met the Kansas City Chiefs , who had to leave the field with a 35:10 defeat. A year later, the Oakland Raiders were defeated 33:14 in Super Bowl II . Kramer ended his career after the 1968 season.
