Delbert Martin Shofner (born December 11, 1934 in Center , Texas - † March 11, 2020 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American American football player . He played as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) with the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Giants .

Player career

Shofner attended high school in his birthplace and then studied at Baylor University , where he also played American football for their college football team , the Baylor Bears. At college, he mostly ran on the position of halfback . In 1957 the Bears moved into the Sugar Bowl and were able to beat the University of Tennessee 13: 7. In this game he prepared a touchdown of his team with a run over 54 yards . Shofner was named the Game's Most Valuable Player for his accomplishments .

In 1957, the tall Shofner was drawn in the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round in 11th place. His career began hesitantly at first. In the first year of the game he received little time and was only used as a punter . It was only in the second year that he was used as a wide receiver by Head Coach Sid Gillman and was able to achieve eight touchdowns and 1097 yards of space, which was the league's best performance this year. In 1961 Shofner moved to the New York Giants. Staged again and again by quarterback Y. A. Tittle , he was able to gain more than 1000 yards of space from 1961 to 1963 by passing catches. 1962 he had his best year there. He got 53 pass catches, with which he scored 1133 yards of space and 12 touchdowns. Shofner ended his career in 1967.

Honors

Shofner was a member of the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team . He was voted All Pro five times and played five times in the Pro Bowl , the season final game of the best players of the season.
