Edward Doyle "Eddie" Meador (born August 10, 1937 in Dallas , Texas , USA ) is a retired American football player . He played safety and cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Los Angeles Rams .

youth

Eddie Meador was born in Dallas. His mother was a painter, his father worked as a craftsman. His family later moved to Kingston , Arkansas. He attended high school in Russellville . In addition to American football, he was active at the school as an athlete and basketball player. Although he only played football for one year at school, he was elected to the state selection. Because of his athletic achievements, his school honored him several times. After graduating from high school in 1955, he joined Arkansas Tech University .

Player career

College career

Ed Meador received a 1955 scholarship from Arkansas Tech University, based in Russellville. He played both football and basketball for the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys . In football he played in various positions and was elected three times in the selection of the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference . In total, he managed to set 19 school records.

Professional career

The Wonder Boys played in a lower class college league, but the NFL scouts had noticed him. In 1959, he was from the Los Angeles Rams in the seventh round at the 80th spot drafted . He received a hand money of US $ 500 for signing the contract . He needed the money to buy a car, which he then used to move to California with his first wife and first son . The Rams team was looked after by Sid Gillman , who initially used Meador as a cornerback. After his rookie season , Meador played in his first Pro Bowl . His team voted him Defensive Rookie Player of the Year.

In 1960 Bob Waterfield took over the role of coach with the Rams. Neither Gillman nor Waterfield managed to form a top team from the team. The Rams agreed to pay Eddie Meador an annual salary of $ 14,000 in 1963, and then moved to the position of safety in 1964 . In this position he was voted defensive player off the year by his team after the season. Although numerous other top players such as Deacon Jones , Lamar Lundy or Merlin Olsen played in the Rams team and he set a team record with 126 tackles in 1965 , the team's unsuccessfulness should initially not change. In 1966, George Allen took over the position of head coach at the Rams. Everyone managed to improve the team's performance considerably. In 1967 Edward Meador was able to move into the play-offs for the first time with his team . The Rams had won eleven of 14 games in the regular season and faced the Green Bay Packers , supervised by Vince Lombardi , in the divisional play-off game . The team from Green Bay was superior and won the game 28: 7. In the following year, the Rams won ten of their 14 games, Ed Meador's performance was still not enough to move his team back into the play-offs.

In 1969, the Rams' eleven victories faced three defeats, which brought them back to the play-offs. In the divisional play-off game, Eddie Meador's team met the Minnesota Vikings coached by Bud Grant . Meador was able to intercept a pass from quarterback Joe Kapp in the game . However, he could not prevent the narrow 23:20 defeat of his team. After another season, Eddie Meador ended his career in 1970. During his season with the Rams he was able to achieve 46 interceptions, this is still a team record today.

After the playing career

Eddie Meador served as chairman of the NFL players' union in 1970. He then retired from football and moved with his family back to Texas, where he worked as a successful businessman. He now lives in Virginia and owns a jewelry business.

Honors

Edward Meador played six times in the Pro Bowl, the final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All-Pro eight times . He is a member of the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team , the Los Angeles Rams 40th Anniversary Team, the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, and the Arkansas Tech University Hall of Distinction.
