Lemuel Jackson "Lem" Barney (* 8. September 1945 in Gulfport , Mississippi ) is a former American American football player in the National Football League . He played as a cornerback for the Detroit Lions .

Player career

Lem Barney studied at Jackson State University and played there as a defensive back for their American football team. During his studies he was elected to the league selection three times. Barney received his bachelor's degree in science. In 1967 he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of 34 spot drafted . The team was trained by the multiple Pro Bowl player Joe Schmidt . Barney was able to assert himself in his rookie year in the defense of the Lions and caught 10 interceptions , which, like the gained space of 232 yards , was the NFL annual best. In 1970 Barney was able to move into the play-offs with the Lions , but where they were prematurely defeated by the Dallas Cowboys trained by Tom Landry with 0: 5. After the 1977 season, Barney ended his playing career.

Honors

Lem Barney played seven times in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All-Pro seven times and, after the 1967 season, NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year . Barney is a member of the NFL 1960s All-Decade Team , the Black College Football Hall of Fame and, since 1992, the Pro Football Hall of Fame . The Sporting News magazine named him one of the Top 100 Football Players of All Time. The Detroit Lions have honored him at Ford Field at the Detroit Lions Ring of Honor since 2015 .

Off the NFL

Lem Barney was friends with Marvin Gaye . He met Gaye when he did an unsuccessful trial with the Lions in 1970. In 1971 he was a backing singer for the recording of Gaye 's hit single What's Going On . Barney exercised various professions after his playing career. He worked for an energy company in Michigan until 1993 . He was released after causing a traffic accident while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He then worked in the car dealership of his former teammate Mel Farr . Since 1980 he has also worked as a sports commentator for American television and annotates college football games . He is also a lay preacher in a Baptist church .
