Barry David Sanders (* 16th July 1968 in Wichita , Kansas ) is a former American American football player at the position of the running backs . Sanders played ten years in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions .

Sanders spent his college days at Oklahoma State University , where he played college football for their football team, the Cowboys , and won the 1988 Heisman Trophy for best college football player. This year he set the record for most yards run in a season with 2,628 yards .
National Football League
Sanders was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 1989 first round of the NFL Draft . In 1997, along with Brett Favre , he was awarded the NFL Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) as the most valuable player of the season . In 1997, he became the third running back in NFL history to run more than 2,000 yards (2,053 yards) in one season. Barry Sanders played ten years in the NFL, reaching over 1,000 yards each season , which was only possible with Curtis Martin in his first ten seasons. He was also called up to ten Pro Bowls . Barry Sanders retired from the Detroit Lions in 1998. At that time he was second in the NFL's all-time best list with 15,269 yards. He is a member of the National Football League's 1990s All-Decade Team and was NFL Rookie of the Year in his first season . In 1988 he received the Walter Camp Award , as well as the Bert Bell Award in 1991 and 1997 . He was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame , the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
