Charles Cameron Woodson (* 7. October 1976 in Fremont , Ohio ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the cornerbacks and Free Safety . He played college football at the University of Michigan , where he won the 1997 Heisman Trophy . The Oakland Raiders then drafted him and he played 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for them and the Green Bay Packers . He was nominated nine times for the Pro Bowl and received eight all-pro awards. In 2010 he won Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers . He is a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and is considered a safe Hall of Famer after the five-year waiting period .

Early years

Woodson was born in Fremont , Ohio . He attended Ross High School where he was named Ohio's "Mr. Football" when he was a senior. He set school records for yards run (3,861) and scored points (466). While most universities wanted him to be recruited as a running back , the University of Michigan was the only one that saw him as a defensive back . In addition to football, he also played basketball and was active as a long jumper and relay runner in the athletics team .

Woodson decided among numerous sports scholarships for the University of Michigan, where he played from 1995 to 1997 for the "Wolverines" football. From the third game of his freshman season he was a regular player and was on the starting line-up in the following 34 games. He not only played as a cornerback , but was also used as a punt returner and wide receiver , making him one of the rare "two-way players" who played for both offense and defense . In his first year he was named " Big Ten Freshman of the Year" and a year later he became the third player in the Wolverines to win the Heisman Trophy , ahead of Peyton Manning . He is the first and so far still the only defensive player to be awarded the most important college football award. In 1997, when he beat the Ohio State Buckeyes , he managed an interception in his own end zone , the only offensive touchdown and he returnt a punt for another touchdown, which they qualified for the Rose Bowl . There they met the Washington State Cougars , where Woodson helped his team to victory with another endzone interception, which meant winning the national championship. That same year, he was named 11th Best College Football Player in History by ESPN .

NFL

Oakland Raiders (1998-2005)

Woodson was selected by the Oakland Raiders as the fourth player in the 1998 NFL Draft . From day one he was a regular player and played in all 16 games of the season in 1998. His 64 tackles were the most defensive backs that season and he made five interceptions. He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year and took part in the Pro Bowl .

Woodson played in all 64 games of the season in his first four NFL seasons and was elected to the Pro Bowl every year, as well as three times to the All-Pro .

In 2002 he suffered his first major injury since his first year in college. Due to a shoulder injury and a broken fibula , he missed eight regular season games, but was ready for the play-offs again on time. The Raiders moved into Super Bowl XXXVII , where they were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite an interception from the ailing Woodson .

After reaching the Super Bowl the previous year , the Raiders only won four games in 2003. Woodson, whose contract expired after the season, made no secret of his dissatisfaction with head coach Bill Callahan . The club and players finally agreed to put Woodson with the franchise tag , which tied him to the Raiders for another year. He made 13 games that season before a leg injury forced him to skip the last three games. He then received the franchise day again, before breaking his leg on the sixth day of the 2005 season and being out for the rest of the season.

Green Bay Packers (2006-2012)

On April 26, 2006, Woodson and the Green Bay Packers agreed on a seven-year contract that could bring him up to 52.7 million US dollars including bonus payments .

In 2006 he was named the team's primary punt returner for the first time in his career. He gained 363 yards of space with 41 returns and eight interceptions as a cornerback, which was a career record at that time. In 2008 and 2009 he was named "NFL Defensive Player of the Month" in September. He also took part in his fifth Pro Bowl in 2008, his first as a packer.

In 2009 he had his best season when he was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year , after he was the only NFL defender to date to have been voted "NFL Defensive Player of the Month" three times in one season. He got 74 tackles, 18 defended passes and nine interceptions, three of which he ran back for a touchdown. In addition, he got on November 15, 2009 against the Dallas Cowboys , as the first player in NFL history a sack , two forced fumbles and an interception in one game. In his first four seasons at Green Bay he made 28 more interceptions than in the previous eight years in Oakland (17). In addition, he had more touchdowns (8 vs. 2) and sacks (6 vs. 5.5) which meant that practically all important statistics had improved after his move. Woodson is Green Bay Packer's record holder in defensive touchdowns (8).

In 2010 he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the seventh time after two interceptions and five forced fumbles during the season. In the play-offs he was appointed captain of the defense together with AJ Hawk . The Packers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles , Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears and entered Super Bowl XLV . There they met the Pittsburgh Steelers when Woodson broke his collarbone just before the break while successfully trying to defend a pass to Mike Wallace . Unable to help his team athletically, he then made an emotional half-time speech and was forced to watch the rest of the game from the sideline. The Packers eventually beat the Steelers by 31:25 and gave Woodson his first and only NFL championship. In September 2010, the then 33-year-old received from the Packers, despite an existing remaining contract term of three years, a contract extension for two more years and an additional $ 55 million.

On the second day of the 2011 season he intercepted Cam Newton , after Vinny Testaverde , Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart for the fourth time a winner of the Heisman Trophy. On game day four, he broke 50 interceptions when he intercepted a pass from Kyle Orton .

In 2012 he moved to the position of Free Safety to fill a weak point in the team. In the course of the season he also ran on as Strong Safety, before he missed the last nine games of the regular season due to a broken collarbone. In the play-offs, the Minnesota Vikings could first be defeated before Woodson and Co. lost to the San Francisco 49ers .

On February 15, 2013, Woodson was released from the Green Bay Packers.

Return to the Oakland Raiders (2013-2015)

On May 21, 2013, the now 36-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Oakland Raiders. On October 6, 2013, in the game against the San Diego Chargers , Woodson set the NFL record of Darren Sharper and his former teammate Rod Woodson for the most defensive touchdowns scored (13). This season he was on the field with 1,067 of 1,074 possible defensive plays and posted 97 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles, two captured fumbles and one interception. After the season he extended to Oakland for another year. In 2014 he set a career record in tackles (113) and he also got four interceptions. In the spring of 2015, the Raiders announced that Woodson would play another year. In the 2015 season he moved from the position of Free Safety to Strong Safety. Before the game against the Denver Broncos on matchday five, Woodson announced that he had always wanted to intercept a pass from Peyton Manning , which he had not been able to do in previous encounters. When the Raiders lost 10:16, Woodson kept his word and intercepted two passes.

In December 2015, Woodson announced that he would retire when the season ended. At the age of 39, he made his last game on December 21, 2015 against the team that also faced him on his professional debut, the Kansas City Chiefs . In his 18th and final season as a professional, he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the ninth time and the All-Pro for the eighth time.
