James William Plunkett (* 5. December 1947 in Santa Clara , California ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 years and won two Super Bowls ( XV and XVIII ) with the Oakland / Los Angeles Raiders . After winning his first title, Plunkett was named Super Bowl MVP .

youth

The Mexican and American-born Plunkett comes from a modest background. He himself described his parents as poor and completely uneducated. They both had poor eyesight and his mother was completely blind. Both met at a school for the blind. Plunkett, who still has two siblings, was therefore repeatedly forced to take odd jobs in his youth. For example, he worked alongside school as a gas station attendant or drugstore salesman. Even in high school , Plunkett's talent for American football became apparent. In addition to football (he played as quarterback and defensive end ) Plunkett also played numerous other sports such as baseball and basketball .

college

Plunkett received a scholarship from Stanford University and ran for the Stanford Indians , now the Stanford Cardinal . Due to injury, Plunkett was only used there in defense . But he managed to increase his throwing power, which had suffered from the injury. In his sophomore year he was given the opportunity to run as starting quarterback and scored four touchdowns in the first game. In 1969 he was able to throw passes for a space gain of 2,673 yards and 20 touchdowns - that was a league record. After this year he would have the opportunity to switch to the NFL by dropping out of his studies. However, he remained loyal to his college and led this in 1970 to the Rose Bowl , which was won against Ohio State University with 27:17.

NFL

Plunkett was selected first in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots in the first round . Plunkett's big plus was his strong and precise limb with which he had repeatedly managed to put his passport recipients in the limelight in college. In his first year as a professional he became a starting quarterback and was able to achieve 19 touchdowns. Plunkett, however, could not provide his performance continuously, he regularly threw more interceptions than touchdowns. Numerous injuries contributed to the rest. In addition, the Patriots were a mediocre team and regularly missed the play-offs . In 1976 Plunkett was given to the San Francisco 49ers . But he could not lead this team into the play-offs in the next two years, Plunkett's performance remained mixed.

In 1978 he was fired before the season and then joined the Oakland Raiders with head coach Tom Flores . At first this was not a stroke of luck for him. In 1978 he did not play at all, in 1979 he was only used as a substitute in four games. In 1980, after many years in the NFL, his final breakthrough came. The starting quarterback of the Raiders, Dan Pastorini , was injured and Plunkett had to step in, whereby he succeeded absolutely nothing in the first game and lost the game against Kansas City Chiefs 31:17. Nevertheless, Plunkett kept his regular place. After they beat the San Diego Chargers , headed by Head Coach Don Corvell and Quarterback Dan Fouts , 34:27 in the AFC Championship Game this season , they also won Super Bowl XV against the Philadelphia Eagles with Head Coach Dick Vermeil and Quarterback Ron Jaworski , with 27:10 to the Raiders. Plunkett had contributed three touchdown passes to the win and was voted Super Bowl MVP .

After two weaker years, the Raiders - now based in Los Angeles - were able to move into the AFC Championship Game again in the 1983 season and the Seattle Seahawks , who ran under head coach Chuck Knox with their wide receiver Steve Largent and quarterback Dave Krieg , with 30: Beat 14. The Super Bowl XVIII , against the Washington Redskins trained by Joe Gibbs with quarterback Joe Theismann , went clearly to the Raiders with 38: 9. Plunkett was able to achieve another touchdown and this season found an excellent teammate in the new running back Marcus Allen , who was also elected Super Bowl MVP.

The following three years were not very successful for Plunkett due to injury, he was mostly only used as a substitute. After the 1986 season, he ended his career.

Honors

Plunkett won the Heisman Trophy , the Walter Camp Award and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame . Plunkett was voted Super Bowl MVP in his first Super Bowl . In 1980 he was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year , and in 1971 he received the AFL-AFC Rookie of the Year award - for the best young player of the entire season in the American Football Conference (AFC).

After the career

Plunkett still works in the Raiders organization as a television and radio presenter.
