‹  Super Bowl XXXVIII Super Bowl XL  ›

The Super Bowl XXXIX was the 39th Super Bowl , the final game of the 2004 season of the National Football League (NFL). On February 6, 2005, the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles faced each other at ALLTEL Stadium , now TIAA Bank Field , in Jacksonville , Florida . The winners were the New England Patriots with a final score of 24:21. The Patriots were the second team, after the Dallas Cowboys , to win three Super Bowls within four years and the first since 1998 ( Denver Broncos ) to win two finals in a row.

New England wide receiver Deion Branch has been voted Super Bowl MVP . He caught eleven balls and scored 133  yards , but could not score points such as a touchdown . He is only the third offense player to become Super Bowl MVP without scoring a touchdown.

background

Season course

New England Patriots

The season of the Patriots went very well due to the experienced team, supplemented by a few newcomers. The Patriots attacking team received great support from running back Corey Dillon , who previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals for seven years . Dillon visibly improved his performance with the Patriots, scoring 1,635 yards in the 2004 season, which is still a team record today. He was also able to run twelve touchdowns and was elected for the fourth time in his life to the Pro Bowl , the all-star game of the National Football League. Other important runners were Kevin Faulk as fullback and kick-off returner, who scored a total of three touchdowns during the season, and Patrick Pass .

With Tom Brady they had one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He completed 288 of 474 passes (60.8%) for a total of 3,692 yards, 28 touchdowns with 14 interceptions . His main target was Deion Branch , who was replaced by David Givens as the first wide receiver due to injuries during the season .

The Patriots' defense this season has been marked by injuries, especially in the cornerback position . The season for Tyrone Poole and Ty Law ended at the beginning of the season due to injury, and Safety Eugene Wilson also missed a few games. These key players were replaced by newcomer Randall Gay , Earthwind Moreland , who had never played before, and Troy Brown , who had been a wide receiver with the Patriots for twelve years without ever playing on defense. In addition, Asante Samuel played more often than in the previous season, when he was only used for the Dime formations. Due to the new players, the backfield, i.e. the players behind the defensive line , was only mediocre this season. Still one of the best in the league, the Patriots line was led by five-time all-star player Richard Seymour . Other outstanding players next to him included the three experienced linebackers Tedy Bruschi , Willie McGinest and Mike Vrabel , who were able to score many sacks and tackles . Vrabel played in attack several times, despite being a defender, and caught two balls there during the season - both touchdowns.

In the play-offs they improved their performance again and defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional playoff with 20: 3 points. Their quarterback Peyton Manning had , among other things, 49 thrown touchdown passes, the then new NFL record, far better statistics than Brady. This was followed by the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers . The Patriots were able to intercept a ball from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger three times in this game , which helped them to a 43:27 victory.

Philadelphia Eagles

At the beginning of the season, the Philadelphia Eagles got good support from wide receiver Terrell Owens for a strong passing game, which they showed throughout the season. For the quarterback Donovan McNabb this season was statistically the best up to then; he was able to complete 300 of 469 passes with 3,875 yards of space and 31 touchdowns and only eight intercepted balls . The running game of the Eagles was relatively bad and could only reach 24th place in the NFL with only 1,639 yards of space gain. The offensive line was very strong, two players were selected for the Pro Bowl , and three of the four Safetys were selected for the NFL's all-star game. In particular due to the defense performance, the Eagles were the best team in the NFC after the regular season with a record of thirteen wins and three defeats. They prevailed against the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional play-off game 27:14 and were thus in the NFC Championship Game for the fourth time in a row . After they lost the three previous Championship Games, however, they were able to move into the Super Bowl with a 27:10 win against the Atlanta Falcons .

Price increase

The tickets were distributed among the teams, as every year - 17.5% each went to the Patriots and Eagles, 5% to the hosts, the Jacksonville Jaguars, 34.8% to the 29 remaining teams and the remaining 25.2% to the NFL and its sponsors or were raffled. The prices for such a card were officially at $ 500 for the cheapest seats, on the black market around four times as much. The prices for hotels in Jacksonville and the surrounding area have increased more than tenfold for this weekend, parking spaces directly at the stadium cost several hundred dollars for the game day.

Television broadcasts

In the United States, FOX broadcast Super Bowl XXXIX as part of the NFL-on-FOX program. Commentators were Joe Buck and Chris Collinsworth . In addition, Troy Aikman worked as a reporter on the sidelines. In Germany, the NFL final was broadcast digitally unencrypted by Premiere Sport 1 . The game moderator was Günter Zapf , who was supported by Sebastian Hellmann as co-moderator. In Austria it was shown by the Austrian radio .

The Super Bowl was broadcast in at least 30 languages in over 220 countries around the world and was followed by around 960 million people. With 50 million viewers, Japan had the highest number of viewers outside of the United States.

advertising

As every year, the commercials during the Super Bowl were the most expensive in the world, both in production and airtime. For example, 30 seconds of broadcasting time cost around 2.4 million US dollars, which at the time was equivalent to around 1.8 million  euros . As every year, the advertising was not allowed to be shown in Germany for legal reasons, but the first few seconds were often shown on Premiere.

For the first time in a Super Bowl, one advertisement was replaced by another. The domain provider GoDaddy.com played in his spot on the Halbzeitshoweklat last year, in which Janet Jackson a wardrobe malfunction ( English had for "wardrobe malfunction") as Justin Timberlake her undressed supposedly by mistake the top of what is also called Nipplegate was called. In advertising, the wrestler Candice Michelle applied as an advertising character for GoDaddy.com for the Super Bowl advertisement, the wearer of her top fell off several times. Originally the advertisement was supposed to be played twice; the second broadcast, which was scheduled for the last two minutes before the first half, was then replaced by a promotion for the subsequent The Simpsons episode.

I'm going to Disney World ( English for "I'm Going to Disney World "), a campaign by the Walt Disney Company , was the first time in Super Bowl XXI not broadcast. USA Today newspaper selected the Bud Light beer brand ad as the best advertisement for this Super Bowl. In this clip, a scary fellow pilot is supposed to jump out of the plane with a parachute, but doesn't dare. A friend throws out a six-pack of Bud Light, but he still doesn't jump. The aircraft's only pilot then runs out of the cockpit and jumps after the beer himself, without a parachute. Then the friend of the scary skydiver jumps himself and leaves him alone in the rapidly falling plane.

Before the game

On the day of the game, John Fogerty , Kelly Clarkson , the Black Eyed Peas , Earth, Wind and Fire , Charlie Daniels and Gretchen Wilson performed in Jacksonville. Immediately before the game started, Alicia Keys sang "America the Beautiful" in honor of Ray Charles, who died in June 2004 . The United States National Anthem was performed by the choirs of the United States Military Academy , United States Naval Academy , United States Air Force Academy, and United States Coast Guard Academy . They were supported by the trumpets of the "United States Army Herald Trumpets".

This time two McDonnell Douglas F / A-18s and two Lockheed Martin F-22s , which were the most modern aircraft of the United States Air Force at the time, flew at the traditional air parade . The subsequent coin toss was made by teenage football players from Jacksonville to illustrate the National Football League's youth development. For the third time, the teams were introduced as The Patriots and The Eagles , respectively . This mode was introduced by the Patriots at Super Bowl XXXVI , before each player had been named individually. In a pre-recorded video, originally from Philadelphia said Will Smith , the Eagles and the from Massachusetts native Michael Chiklis at the Patriots.

Halftime show

The halftime show was musically designed by Paul McCartney . He was selected because he was considered "safe" against unpleasant surprises after the halftime show at Super Bowl XXXVIII last year. McCartney played three songs by the Beatles ( Drive My Car , Get Back and Hey Jude ) and one of the Wings ( Live and Let Die ). Around 10,000 more spectators came to his performance and gathered around the stage in the middle. Paul McCartney received approximately $ 3.5 million for the less than 10 minute performance.

Course of the game

First half

The game began with the Eagles losing the ball . After a sack through linebacker Willie McGinest , Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb lost the ball, which was picked up by the Patriots, giving the Patriots possession on Philadelphia's 34-yard line. The head coach of the Eagles, Andy Reid , doubted the referee's decision and called out a coach's challenge . Due to the video evidence, the play was reset, because McNabb was already on the ground when he dropped the ball from his hands.

Neither team could achieve long passes or runs in the early game. The Eagles had the first major opportunity to win points. McNabb threw a 30-yard pass at Terrell Owens , with a penalty they could gain another nine yards, so that they were in the Red Zone, the 20 yards directly before the opposing end zone, the Patriots. In the next play, however, McNabb was sacked by linebacker Mike Vrabel , which resulted in a loss of 16 yards. McNabb then threw a pass into the end zone , which was intercepted by Asante Samuel . Since this move involved an illegal touch on the part of the Patriots, the Eagles got the ball back. However, they also gambled away the second option, as Safety Rodney Harrison intercepted the ball again. In return, Philadelphia's defense succeeded in forcing the Patriots to punt , a ball drop after a shot of the ball, in their attack series . This failed, which is why the Eagles were able to begin their next attack series at the opposing 45-yard line. But this time too, the Eagles blocked the chance for points, LJ Smith lost the ball after a tackle by Randall Gay from his hands.

Still, the Philadelphia Eagles managed to punt the Patriots again and got the ball back deep in their own half. This time, however, they played their attack streak much better and scored 81 yards in 9 moves and thus made it to the opposing end zone. McNabb managed a 6-yard pass to Smith, which resulted in a touchdown and a 7-0 lead after the extra point.

The Patriots came quickly to the opposing 4-yard line during their next attack series. The almost certain point win ended, however, again in a fumble, which in turn meant possession for the Eagles. However, these did not get beyond their own 10-yard line and had to hit a punt. The Patriots fought their way again, this time more successfully, to the opposing end zone, where Tom Brady was able to equalize with a short pass to David Givens . The result of 7: 7 was also the half-time result.

Second half

The Patriots advanced 71 yards through a strong passing game right after half-time. A 2-yard pass to Vrabel completed the attack streak and gave New England a 14-7 lead. However, the lead did not last long, because in the same quarter the Eagles were able to equalize with a 10-yard pass from McNabb to Biran Westbrook . The third quarter ended with a score of 14:14 and, for the first time in the history of Super Bowl, the last quarter began with both teams tied.

The decisive last quarter started perfectly for the Patriots, who immediately took the lead with a touchdown. The key player in this series of attacks was Kevin Faulk , who covered a total of 39 yards and put his team in a promising position. Running back Corey Dillon put his team seven points ahead with a 2-yard run. Philadelphia could not use the subsequent possession and so the Patriots came back into the game. Head coach Belichick brought his team just a few yards from the opposing red zone through video evidence. New England took the chance and tried a field goal . Adam Vinatieri scored the 22-yard field goal and extended the lead to 24:14.

After an unsuccessful attack, the Eagles got the ball back after a punt by the Patriots. This time they got 79 yards in 13 plays and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Greg Lewis . The Eagles were able to shorten it to 21:24, but there were only two minutes left to play. With an onside kick, the Eagles tried to regain the ball themselves at the kick-off, but this failed. In their subsequent attack series, the Patriots tried to downplay the time by pure running game and thus force the Eagles to take their timeouts. The attack ended with a punt that put the Eagles in possession of the ball deep in their own half. They stood on their own 4-yard line and only had 46 seconds to score.

On the first play, McNabb threw the ball at Westbrook under heavy pressure from the Patriots defense. This caught the ball and was immediately attacked and brought to the ground. Instead of dropping the ball to stop the clock, the Eagles failed to gain space and could not stop the clock. In the second attempt, with increasing time pressure behind them, they tried a long pass to Owens, which also failed. In the third and because of the short remaining playing time, the last attempt, the ball slipped from Smith's hands, which resulted in an interception and thus also the victory for the New England Patriots.

Statistically, both teams were about the same in terms of space gained, the Patriots were more focused on the running game and the Eagles on the passing game. Donovan McNabb threw a total of 51 times, but only hit a recipient 30 times. As a result, he scored three touchdowns with a total of 357 yards of space. His team was only able to run 44 yards in 17 attempts, an average of 2.6 yards per run. McNabb blamed the three interceptions and two fumbles for the Eagles' defeat, as he said after the game:

“I said all week turnovers would be the key and they were for [the Patriots]. As a quarterback you want to make sure you take care of the ball - turnovers kill you. "

“I've always said that losing the ball is the key, and it was [for the Patriots] too. As a quarterback you want to control the ball - losing the ball is fatal. "

- Donovan McNabb

Brady threw 33 balls and was able to complete around 70% of them, i.e. 23 balls. As a result, he only achieved a space gain of 236 yards with two touchdowns. The Patriots' statistically best pass recipient was Deion Branch, who caught eleven passes for 133 yards of gain but no touchdown.

tactics

The Patriots played a completely different defense strategy at the Super Bowl than in the previous season. There they used a so-called 3–2 club scheme, but in this game a 4–3 lineup, the Eagles kept their strategy from the season. New England's attack strategy also changed, before the Super Bowl they too specialized in passing, but in the game they specialized in the safer running game. The Eagles, as in their defense, stuck to the same strategy that the Patriots had already figured out.

After the game

The NFL paid a $ 68,000 bonus to each participating Patriots player and $ 36,500 to each of the Eagles. At the cost of living index measured this represents less than that of Super Bowl I paid sum.

After the game, the Patriots and Eagles were seen as almost invincible because they were very well built and stable, they did not change coaching staff often or not at all and thus had well-thought-out strategies. The mindset of making money also played a role. So said Robert Kraft , owner of the Patriots, it matters what will make the team, either as much money as it comes, or win. The Patriots had won three Super Bowls in just four years and after Super Bowl XXXIX were just the "Patriots Dynasty" that ruled the NFL. Despite these good predictions, neither team made it to the Super Bowl the next year. However, New England remained an outstanding team and were able to leave the 2007 season with a record of 18: 1 almost unbeaten to be the second team in the NFL with a perfect season . However, they lost to the New York Giants at Super Bowl XLII .
