The Super Bowl XVII was the 17th Super Bowl , the final game of the 1982 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 30, 1983, the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins faced each other at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena , California . The Washington Redskins won with a final score of 27:17. Washington running back John Riggins , who ran 38 times for 166 yards and scored a touchdown , was named Super Bowl MVP .

background

The season before the Super Bowl had been shortened from 16 to nine games due to player strikes and a special play-off system was used - the 8 best teams in the conference could move in. The Dolphins were very much favored from the start, as they had the best defense in terms of statistics and could catch five interceptions in their last two games . Super Bowl XVII was the first Super Bowl to be shown outside of North America, and the English broadcaster Channel 4 broadcast it.

Course of the game

In the first half of the game, the Dolphins were able to achieve a touchdown with a 76-yard pass, followed by a field goal and another touchdown, which the Redskins replied with the same, which is why it was 17:10 for the Dolphins at halftime. Then there were only points on the Redskins side, a field goal in the third and two touchdowns in the fourth and last quarter, which resulted in the final score of 27:17.
