The Super Bowl XXIII was the 23rd Super Bowl , the final game of the 1988 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 22, 1989, the San Francisco 49ers won the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the third time after Super Bowl XVI and Super Bowl XIX . For the Cincinnati Bengals it was the second participation (Super Bowl XVI) in a Super Bowl. The 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice was named Super Bowl MVP .

The San Francisco 49ers finished the regular season as champions of the NFC West with a score of 10: 6 . As the second-placed team in the National Football Conference (NFC), they qualified directly for the second round of the play-offs . In this they could beat the Minnesota Vikings with 34: 9. In the NFC Championship Game , the Chicago Bears were beaten 28: 3 in Chicago. The Cincinnati Bengals qualified with a score of 12: 4 as the best team in the American Football Conference (AFC) for the play-offs. With victories over the Seattle Seahawks and the Buffalo Bills , the Bengals reached Super Bowl XXIII, which was played at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami.

Course of the game

First halftime

The first half was characterized by the good defensive work of both teams. Only one field goal was scored in the first two quarters . The teams went into the half-time break with a 3-3 draw.

Second halftime

Also in the third quarter only the kickers scored points . Both teams scored each a field goal before the Bengals by a kickoff -Return a touchdown succeeded. In the last quarter, the future Super Bowl MVP , Jerry Rice , caught Joe Montana's passes twice and thus scored the first touchdown for the 49ers. The Bengals were able to take the lead again with another field goal. After the Bengals kickoff, the 49ers had to start their attack around three minutes before the end of the game at their own 8-yard line. The players around Joe Montana managed to overcome the 92 yards in eleven plays and score a touchdown. After the extra point from the kicker, the game was decided in favor of the 49ers.
