Joe Montana
Joseph Clifford "Joe" Montana Jr. (* 11. June 1956 in New Eagle , Washington County , Pennsylvania ) is a former American American football poker players. A pre-eminent quarterback in the 1980s and early 1990s, he is considered one of the best players in the history of the National Football League (NFL). He won the Super Bowl four times with the San Francisco 49ers and was voted Super Bowl MVP three times .
college
Joe Montana played college football with the Fighting Irish at the University of Notre Dame from 1975 to January 1978 and led them to an exciting win in the Cotton Bowl and thus to the national championship in 1977 in his senior year.
NFL
In 1979, however, he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the NFL Draft . In the jersey with the number 16, he led the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories ( 1982 , 1985 , 1989 and 1990 ). He was voted Super Bowl MVP three times . In 1990 he was by the magazine Sports Illustrated for Athlete of the Year chosen. He was honored with the Associated Press Sportsman of the Year award in the same year and in 1989.
Montana is 1.88 m tall and weighed about 93 kg during his active time. He had a below-average throwing power, but a good understanding of the game. He therefore benefited from the West Coast Offense that Bill Walsh introduced with the San Francisco 49ers in the early 1980s. Since this offensive variant is primarily based on a short passing game, but requires a high understanding of the game of the quarterback, it matched Montana's abilities exactly.
His strong nerves, which he often demonstrated in almost hopeless gaming situations, became Montana's trademark. Several times he managed to catch up and turn games. He managed this feat 31 times in the last quarter, earning him the nicknames Comeback Kid , Joe Cool and Montana Magic .
On January 10, 1982 one of the most famous games in the history of the 49ers took place in the sold out Candlestick Park , although it wasn't a Super Bowl, it was "only" the NFC Conference Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys . Joe Montana led the 49ers into their first Super Bowl (Super Bowl XVI) with this game and the game gained great fame through Montana's touchdown pass to Dwight Clark . This touchdown became famous under the name " The Catch " and was the beginning of a great rivalry between the two teams in the 1980s and 1990s.
The victory against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII , when his team had to conquer 92 yards and score a touchdown shortly before the end , also became legendary . Montana calmly led his teammates to victory (10 yards touchdown pass to John Taylor 39 seconds before the end of the game) while still keeping an eye out for celebrities in the audience. With this relaxed confidence, which was confirmed by successes, his teammates trusted him.
While trying to defend his title again, he was injured in January 1991. The recovery dragged on over two years, during which substitute Steve Young replaced him very successfully. To play again, he was released in April 1993 to the Kansas City Chiefs , where he ended his career after the 1994 season. Since his # 16 was not available in Kansas City, he simply turned the 6 to 9 and played for the Chiefs with the number 19.
Records and awards
In his career with the 49ers, he threw 2,929 full passes on 4,600 attempts for 35,142 yards and 240 touchdowns . His entire career has made 3,409 complete passes in 5,391 attempts for 40,551 yards and 273 touchdowns. Montana played eight Pro Bowls . His quarterback rating over his entire career is 92.3, the second highest (no longer active player) of all time - behind his successor in the 49ers, Steve Young. At the earliest possible point in time - five years after the end of his career - he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000 . He is a member of the National Football League 1980s All-Decade Team and, since 1994, of the National Football League 75th Anniversary All-Time Team . He has also won numerous other awards, including the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award and the Bert Bell Award, during and after his career.
