Deron Cherry Leigh (* 12. September 1959 in Riverside , New Jersey ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as safety in the National Football League (NFL) with the Kansas City Chiefs . Cherry is now one of the owners of the Jacksonville Jaguars .

Player career

College career

Deron Cherry attended high school in Palmyra , New Jersey and studied after graduating from Rutgers University for their football team, the Scarlet Knights , he played from 1977 to 1980 as a punter and safety. In 1978 he lost with his team in the Garden State Bowl against the team from Arizona State University 18:34. In 1979 he was elected his team's MVP . That year and the following he was accepted into the selection team of the Big East Conference . For his athletic achievements, he was honored from his college from 1978 to 1980 .

Professional career

After graduating, Deron Cherry was hired by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1981. Shortly before the start of the regular season , he was released from the Kansas City franchise . Since the Chiefs had major problems in the player position of Cherry during the 1981 season due to injuries, they took him back to their team during the season. This late engagement gave Cherry little hope of a long-term career with the Chiefs, especially since a Pro Bowl player, Gary Barbaro, played in the safety position. However, Cherry was able to prevail and was used as a starter from 1983 . In the 1986, 1990 and 1991 seasons, Cherry was able to move into the play-offs with the Chiefs . While he failed with his team in the wild card play-off games in 1986 and 1990 , the Chiefs were able to defeat the Los Angeles Raiders 10: 6 in 1991 . Cherry was instrumental in the success. He got two interceptions , with which he achieved a space gain of 46 yards . Although Cherry also managed an interception in the following divisional play-off game against the Buffalo Bills , his team from Kansas lost the game 14:37. Cherry ended his career immediately after the game.

After the playing career

Deron Cherry is a partner in a representation of products from the Anheuser-Busch Companies . He has also owned shares in the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team since its inception .

Honors

Deron Cherry played six times in the Pro Bowl , was elected All-Pro seven times and is a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team . In 1987 he received the "Whizzer" White NFL Man of the Year Award. His college team honors him in the Rutgers Football Hall of Fame , and the Chiefs inducted him into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in 1996 .
