David Roy "Dave" Butz (* 23. June 1950 in La Fayette , Alabama ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as a defensive end and defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Redskins .
Youth / family
The on a cattle and chicken farm in Chambers County -born Dave Butz visited in Park Ridge , the high school after his family moved to Illinois was moved. At school he played American football and basketball , and he was also active as a discus thrower. In this discipline, he held the Illinois state record for 13 years. As a high school football player, he was voted All American three times . It wasn't until high school that Butz was discovered to be suffering from dyslexia . The reading-spelling disorder was successfully treated and after graduating from school in 1969 he was offered a total of 132 scholarships . Dave Butz is the nephew of Earl Butz , who was the United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1971 to 1976 .
Player career
College career
Dave Butz decided to study sports at Purdue University , where his uncle Earl was a professor. From 1970 to 1972 he played for the Purdue Boilersmakers , his college football team , as a defensive tackle. In 1972 he was voted All-American . In all three years of study, he was recognized by his college for his athletic achievements.
Professional career
Dave Butz graduated from college in 1973 and was drafted fifth that year by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round . The head coach of the Cardinals, Don Coryell , sat Butz in his rookie year in the defense of the team, first as a defensive end. In his second year of play, Butz switched to the position of a defensive tackle. In 1974, Butz managed to qualify with the Cardinals for the play-offs . The team failed in the divisional play-off game at the Minnesota Vikings with 30:14.
The relationship between Dave Butz and Charles Bidwill , the team owner of the Cardinals, was difficult. He was then given by the Cardinals to the Washington Redskins, who immediately increased his annual salary significantly. Butz then played for 14 years for the team from Washington, DC In 1981 Joe Gibbs took over the coaching position with the Redskins. Gibbs formed a top team from the team. In 1982 Butz was able to move into the play-offs with the Redskins. After a 31:17 win over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game , the Redskins were able to defeat the Miami Dolphins 27:17 in the following Super Bowl XVII . Butz managed to secure a fumble in the game .
1983 was another successful year for Butz and the Redskins. After a record of fourteen wins and two defeats, the San Francisco 49ers had to admit defeat to the Redskins with 24:21 in the NFC Championship Game . Butz lost the Super Bowl XVIII against the Los Angeles Raiders with 9:38. In 1986 Butz was with the Redskins against the New York Giants again in the NFC Championship Game. In the game, he managed the quarterback of the Giants, Phil Simms , behind the line of scrimmage to case to bring, at 0: 17-defeat but his team this changed nothing. In 1987 Dave Butz was able to win his second Super Bowl . With two sacks to quarterback Wade Wilson , he was able to contribute significantly to the 17:10 victory of his team over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game. In the following Super Bowl XXII , the Redskins quarterback Doug Williams showed a very good performance and led his team to a safe 42:10 win over the Denver Broncos .
Dave Butz ended his career after the 1988 season. In both Super Bowl victories of the Washington Redskins, he acted as team captain of his team.
After the playing career
Dave Butz worked in business after his career. He is socially active and serves on the board of the National Rifle Association . Butz is married and has three children. He now lives in Belleville with his family .
Honors
David Butz played in 1983 in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was voted All-Pro three times . The Washington Redskins honor him in their stadium , the FedExField , on the Ring of Fame . He's on the list of the 70 Greatest Redskins . Dave Butz is a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame .
