James Arthur "Art" Monk (born December 5, 1957 in White Plains , New York ) is a former American American football player on the position of wide receiver . Before he played one season each with the New York Jets and the Philadelphia Eagles , he played 14 years with the Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL). In 2008 he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame .
Monk is related to the jazz pioneer Thelonious Monk .
Career
college
Monk attended and played college football for Syracuse University . From 1977 to 1979 he held the receiving records in the team and is still represented in several of the university's top 10 career lists, including a. in the pass catches (6th place), in the yards caught (7th place) and yards caught per game (9th place). In the end, he graduated from university in Visual and Performing Arts.
NFL
Monk was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round . During his rookie year , he was unanimously voted into the all-rookie selection with his 58 pass catches, which were a rookie record for the Redskins . In 1984 he reached a new NFL record with 106 catches for 1,372 yards. He caught eight or more passes, reached 100 yards or more in five games, and in the game against the San Francisco 49ers, caught 10 passes for 200 yards. With these achievements he reached his first Pro Bowl appointment. In the following two seasons it also reached the 1,000 yard mark. The achievements were possible because he could not be overlooked on the field at 1.90 m and was on average 10 cm taller than the other wide receivers . So he mostly caught the balls that came over the middle. He quickly ran off the line of scrimmage , turned inward after five or six yards, caught the ball and was able to gain a few yards of space before the defenders could react. In 1989 he was part of the very successful wide receiver trio around Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders , which was also called "The Posse". With this style of play he managed a first down on 66% of his 888 catches .
During his 14 seasons with the Redskins, he won the Super Bowl three times ( XVII , XXII and XXVI ).
By the end of his career, he had caught 940 passes for 12,721 yards and 68 touchdowns. He was also the first player in NFL history to catch over 102 passes in one season and over 900 in his entire career. His most notable achievement for the NFL was the new record for passing catches (940), but this was beaten by Jerry Rice shortly thereafter.
Honors
On August 2, 2008, Monk was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame , along with teammate Darrell Green . He has to wait a long time for this honor, however, because although he owned three Super Bowl rings, critics criticized his weakness with the deep passes. When he was inducted , he received the longest standing ovation in Hall of Fame history.
