Joseph Erwin "Joe" Jacoby (* 6. July 1959 in Louisville . Kentucky ) is a retired American American football poker players. He played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the Washington Redskins .

Player career

College career

Joe Jacoby studied at the University of Louisville for their football team , the Louisville Cardinals he played from 1978 to 1980 as an offensive tackle. In his senior year, he was the team captain of the Cardinals.

Professional career

In 1981 Joe Gibbs took over the position of head coach with the Washington Redskins. Jacoby had contacted him personally because he was not considered in the NFL Draft . Gibbs gave him a chance and Jacoby got a professional contract with the Redskins after pre-season. Jacoby was already used as a rookie as a starter on the position of an offensive tackle. He had the task of protecting his own quarterback Joe Theismann and running back John Riggins to block the way into the opposing end zone . The Redskins had signed Russ Grimm and Mark May in the same year as Jacoby . Together with Jeff Bostic and George Starke , who were already under contract with the team , they formed the offensive line that went down in NFL history as The Hogs .

In 1982 Jacoby had his first big success. After a 31:17 win over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game , the Redskins were able to defeat the Miami Dolphins 27:17 in the following Super Bowl XVII . Jacoby played a not insignificant role in the victory of his team. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Redskins were back 13:17. With Jacoby as a blocker, running back John Riggins managed to score a 43 yard touchdown .

1983 was another successful year for Jacoby and the Redskins. After a record of fourteen wins and two defeats, the San Francisco 49ers had to admit defeat to the Redskins with 24:21 in the NFC Championship Game . Jacoby and the Washington, DC team lost Super Bowl XVIII against the Los Angeles Raiders 9:38.

In 1986 Joe Jacoby was with the Redskins against the New York Giants again in the NFC Championship Game. The game ended in a 17-0 loss for the Redskins.

In 1987 Joe Jacoby was able to win his second Super Bowl . Doug Williams had taken over the position of the starting quarterback during the season . With the help of his offensive line, he led the team to a 17:10 win over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game. In the following Super Bowl XXII , the Redskins were able to gain 280 yards of space through running play, and Williams also showed a very good performance. In the 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos , he threw a total of four touchdowns.

After a regular season with 14 wins from 16 games, Jacoby was also able to successfully pass the 1991 season. After a 41:10 victory in the NFC Championship Game over the Detroit Lions , a 37:24 victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVI followed . In both games, the opposing defense failed to cross the Redskins offensive line to bring down quarterback Mark Rypien with a sack behind the line of scrimmage . Joe Jacoby retired after the 1993 season.

After the playing career

After his career, Joe Jacoby ran a car dealership until 2008. Since 2008 he has been the assistant coach of the football team at Shenandoah University .

Honors

Joe Jacoby played in the Pro Bowl four times and was voted All-Pro five times . The Washington Redskins honor him in their stadium , the FedExField , on the Ring of Fame . He's on the list of the 70 Greatest Redskins . Jacoby is a member of the 1980s NFL All-Decade Team and the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame .
