Mark Robert Rypien (* 2. October 1962 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played 17 years (intermittently) in the National Football League (NFL) and won the Super Bowl with the Washington Redskins .

college

Rypien was born in Canada , but is an American of Polish descent. He played college football at Washington State University for the Washington State Cougars .

NFL

In 1986, Rypien was selected in the sixth round in 146th place in the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins . Due to an injury, he had to wait two years for his first use in the NFL. It wasn't until 1988 that he was able to gain a regular place at the Redskins and prevail against Doug Williams . He scored 18 touchdowns out of 13 interceptions this round . Until 1991 he continuously increased his performance. The Redskins won 14 of 16 games in the regular season with him as quarterback and also prevailed in the play-offs . In Super Bowl XXVI in Minneapolis , the Redskins prevailed 37:24 against the Buffalo Bills . Rypien scored two touchdowns and was named the Super Bowl MVP .

The Super Bowl victory also made itself felt financially for Rypien. He signed with the Redskins a three-year contract and received a salary of nine million dollars . Due to numerous injured players, the team from Washington, DC could not build on the previous year's success in 1992 and failed in the play-offs at the San Francisco 49ers .

In 1993 he sustained a serious knee injury in the second game of the season and was unable to get going during the season. He did not fully recover from this injury during his career. In 1994 he was fired in Washington and replaced by Heath Shuler . In succession he played for the Cleveland Browns , St. Louis Rams , Philadelphia Eagles and again for the Rams. He couldn't get beyond the role of a substitute player. In 1996 he first ended his career in 2001, surprisingly to join the Indianapolis Colts . He was unsuccessful in four games. In 2002 he signed with the Seattle Seahawks but was released before the season.

During his 105 games in the regular season, he scored 115 touchdowns in 88 interceptions by passing. He had eight touchdowns himself.

In the Great Lakes Indoor Football League , he played another game for the Rochester Raiders in 2006 .

Honors

Rypien played in the Pro Bowl in 1989 and 1991 . After his Super Bowl victory, he was named Super Bowl MVP. The Redskins voted him one of the 80 best players of all time for his club. In 2008 he was inducted into the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame .

After the career

Rypien is married and has two daughters. He now participates in charitable golf tournaments and has set up a foundation to fight cancer in children because his son died of the disease when he was three years old. Until 2007 he was co-owner of a NASCAR team.
