The 1988 NFL season was the 69th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 4, 1988 and ended on December 19, 1988.

The Cardinals moved from St. Louis to Phoenix ahead of the season.

The time between turns has been increased from 30 seconds to 45 seconds. After time-outs and other regulatory game stops, the time from the referee's release to the ball is a maximum of 30 seconds.

The season ended with the Pro Bowl on January 29, 1989 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu , Hawaii .
