The 1947 NFL season was the 28th season of the National Football League . The Chicago Cardinals emerged as the winner of this season .

Rule changes

  • The rules for overtime in the play-offs or the championship game are set.
  • The first overall pick in the NFL draft was raffled in a lottery from 1947. The receiving team got this pick in addition to their normal first round pick.
  • A fifth umpire, the back judge , has been added to the umpire crew.

The 1947 NFL Championship Game took place on December 28, 1947 at Comiskey Park in Chicago , Illinois . The winners of the Eastern and Western divisions competed against each other. The winner of the Eastern Division was determined a week earlier in a play-off game. The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-0 in Pittsburgh.

Don Currivan of the Boston Yanks set the record for the largest average gain of space per pass catch in a season with 32.58 yards per catch (minimum 24 pass catches).
