The 2011 NFL season was the 92nd season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The event was uncertain for a long time due to the lockout and could only be confirmed in mid-July. The regular season began on September 8, 2011 and ended on January 1, 2012. The play-offs began on January 7 and ended with the Super Bowl XLVI on February 5.
Lockout
Due to the "Collective Bargaining Agreement" which expired on March 3, 2011, the implementation of the coming season was long uncertain. The negotiations for a new contract dragged on until March 11th, but failed. Ten active players , including Tom Brady and Drew Brees and a few inactive players, filed a motion of no confidence in the NFL. The league responded with a so-called lockout. On April 25, the lockout was lifted for five days and the league invited to talks. The NFL Draft , which was carried out properly , also fell during this period . Due to the unclear situation, the rookies could not be signed yet. On April 30th, the lockout came into effect again. A court hearing took place on June 3, during which both parties were heard. The decision was set for the end of June, but was temporarily suspended due to the willingness of both sides to talk. On the day before the negotiation, the league met with the opposing party, the NFLPA ( NFL Players Association ), to find a solution.
The point of contention was the distribution of income for the new contract. So far, the team owners have earned the specified sum of one billion US dollars , 60 percent of the remaining income went to players, the rest to the owners. With the new contract, the team owners now demanded that the specified amount be increased to two billion US dollars.
In mid-July 2011, both parties agreed on a new collective agreement for the next ten years. The season went as planned.
Rule changes
The rules were decided in March 2011 at the annual owners meeting.
- The kickoff rules have been renewed. The kickoff has been moved five yards, from the 30-yard line, to the 35-yard line. The receiving team is only more than five yards from the kickoff team, which reduces the speed at which the teams impact and the likelihood of injuries. Further rules were rejected because of concerns that they could have a negative effect on the number of kickoff returns.
- All game moves with winning points are checked by the official game observers and confirmed or doubted. So far, this has only been possible in the last two minutes of the two halves.
- The playing field must be green from the coming season. The main reason for this regulation was the increasing number of requests from sponsors to change the turf to their colors, as was the case at the Bronco Stadium , the stadium of Boise State University . However, the NFL may grant exceptions.
Regular season
The season opening game, the so-called "Kickoff", took place on September 8th at Lambeau Field between the defending champions Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints . The game ended in a 42:34 victory for the Packers.
