The MetLife Stadium is a football stadium in the US Meadowlands Sports Complex in the state of New Jersey . It is owned by two NFL - Franchises New York Giants and New York Jets , who are also operators. The new building for 1.6 billion  US dollars replaced the now demolished, directly adjacent Giants Stadium in 2010 . The sports arena, financed entirely by the two teams , is the second largest stadium of the National Football League with a capacity of 82,500 after the AT&T Stadium of the Dallas Cowboys , which can be expanded to over 105,000 for football. There is space for up to 90,000 spectators in the stadium for events other than American football.

history

Construction of the later MetLife Stadium began on September 5, 2007. The stadium was completed four months ahead of the completion date and costs remained within budget . It was opened 10 April 2010 under the name New Meadowlands Stadium with the annual College - Lacrosse -Veranstaltung Big City Classic . Initially, it was planned to sell the naming rights to the event location to the Allianz Group . After heavy criticism because of the role of the German insurance company in National Socialism , these plans were dropped. Ultimately, New York City- based insurance company MetLife acquired the naming rights in 2011 for 25 years until 2036. The aluminum stadium facade can be illuminated in different colors depending on the event - blue for the Giants, green for the jets, red for a concert and white for other events. The technology was first used at the Allianz Arena in Munich .
