The plans were presented from November 14th to 18th, 2008 and included the new stadium, a club museum, shops, apartments and the new headquarters of the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation . First, the Spurs also were considering for the 2012 Summer Games in the Olympic Stadium London move, but decided after riots in Tottenham in August 2011 , not to resettle the economically important club and to focus on the new building in the old country. From 2013 plans arose to build the stadium as a multifunctional arena in order to also be able to play games of the US National Football League (NFL), which has been playing at Wembley Stadium as part of the NFL International Series since 2007 , in Tottenham . In July 2015, Tottenham Hotspur and the NFL agreed to play at least two NFL games per year in Tottenham over a period of ten years.

In July 2014, the plans for the new stadium in Tottenham were largely approved by the city, with full approval in December 2015 and final approval by London Mayor Boris Johnson in February 2016 . The initial cost was estimated at £ 400 million and completion was scheduled for the beginning of the 2018/19 season. For the 2017/18 season , the Spurs moved to Wembley as the old White Hart Lane was demolished to make way for the new stadium.

Originally, the new stadium was to open with Spurs' first home game in the 2018/19 Premier League against Liverpool FC on September 15, 2018, but the date had to be postponed due to deficiencies in fire protection. The game of the Oakland Raiders against the Seattle Seahawks , which should take place on October 14, 2018 as the first NFL game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, has been moved to Wembley.

In October 2018, the NFL announced that two games of the 2019 season would be played in the new stadium. The game of the Oakland Raiders against Chicago Bears (October 6th) and the encounter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the Carolina Panthers (October 13th) took place in New White Hart Lane .

The first official goal was scored by South Korean striker Son Heung-min . In the UEFA Champions League 2018/19 , the first meeting was the first leg of the quarter-finals on April 9 against Manchester City , Tottenham with the 1: won 0th

From 2020, the Saracens rugby union club will host the annual big game in the stadium. The agreement has a term of five years. The new Tottenham Stadium was selected in May 2019 as the venue for the finals in the European Rugby Champions Cup and the European Challenge Cup 2021.

In early August 2019, the Spurs received approval from Haringey Council to expand the space slightly from 62,062 to 62,214. This is achieved through additional seating on the north and south stands.

In December 2019 it was announced that the first concert in the stadium will take place on May 29, 2020. The American hard rock band Guns N 'Roses is planning a performance in the stadium.
