The Selhurst Park is the football stadium of the English football club Crystal Palace . It opened in 1924 and is located far south of London in the South Norwood district .
history
Selhurst Park holds 26,074 spectators. The seats are exclusively covered seats. The majority of these seats are divided between the grandstands on the sides of the pitch, the Main Stand and the Arthur Wait Stand , both of which are getting on in years and no longer meet the latest standards. On the other hand, the Homesdale Road Stand (built in 1995) on the south side of the pitch is more modern and is the only grandstand consisting of two tiers. At the other end of the field is the White Horse Lane stand, which has relatively few seats but a few boxes.
Although Selhurst Park is owned by Crystal Palace and its chairman Simon Jordan, the stadium has been sublet to two other clubs in the past. Charlton Athletic played its home games at Selhurst Park from 1986 to 1991 before the club returned to the Valley . The direct successor was Wimbledon FC , which was also able to call Selhurst Park its home until the move to Milton Keynes (2003).
Remodeling plans
On December 4, 2017, club chairman Steve Parish presented renovation plans for Selhurst Park. For 75 to 100 million £ (about 85 to 113 million euros ) to modernize the stadium and expanded from 26,000 to 34,000 seats. The conversion phase should take three years. The focus of the renovation is the new main grandstand with a glass facade. This is a throwback to the early years of the club and the Crystal Palace built for the 1851 World's Fair . A centrally placed vault with the eagle coat of arms is reminiscent of the famous exhibition hall. The plans come from the KSS Design Group. The plans are to be presented to the Croydon Council in January 2018. If the building permit is issued, construction work should begin within the next 12 months.
Visitor record and average attendance
On May 11, 1979, 51,482 visitors gathered in Selhurst Park for the game of Crystal Palace against Burnley FC in the Football League Second Division . Since the conversion into a purely seated stadium, the record has been set at 26,193 spectators in the Premier League match against Arsenal on November 6, 2004.
