The Miyagi Stadium ( Japanese 宮城 ス タ ジ ア ム , Miyagi Sutajiamu ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Japanese city ​​of Rifu .

history

It was built on the occasion of the soccer World Cup in 2002 and completed in March 2000. The arena was designed by the architect Hitoshi Abe . The construction costs were 269 ​​million . It currently offers space for 49,133 spectators. The name of the stadium refers to the Miyagi Prefecture , in which the city of Rifu is located.

The first major event in the arena was the 56th National Japanese Sports Festival in 2001 . Japanese J-Pop - boy band SMAP gave concerts in the stadium. During the 2002 World Cup, three games were played here.
