Mitsuzawa Park was opened in 1949 on a site that was formerly part of the Gokoku Shrine in Kanagawa Prefecture , and volleyball competitions were held here at the 4th kokumin taiiku taikai ( National Sports Festival ) held in Tokyo . For the competitions at the 10th kokumin taiiku taikai in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1955, the main competition venues were built in Mitsuzawa Park, including the ball sports stadium for rugby games. At the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo in 1964 , the facility was a venue for the Olympic football tournament . There were five preliminary round matches and a quarter-finals in Yokohama. During the junior soccer world championship in Japan in 1979 , the preliminary round group D with six games and a quarter-finals was located in the stadium of Yokohama. The sports facility was renovated and expanded in 1964 for the Olympic football tournament and in 1993 for use in the J. League .

The venue with 15,454 seats is currently mainly used for soccer games. There are 5,580 seats in the main stand (including 20 wheelchair spaces). The three other tiers have 9,874 spaces with ten wheelchair spaces. The play area made of natural grass is 130 meters long and 74 meters wide. The floodlight system illuminates the stadium from four masts. The LED - Video wall measures 8.5 x 17 m. In 2008, the spring manufacturer Nippon Hatsujō (abbreviated Nippatsu or with the Latin letters NHK for Nippon Hatsujō Kabushikigaisha ; English NHK Spring ) acquired the naming rights for five years.
