Gokoku shrine

Gokoku shrines ( Japanese 護 国 神社 , mostly as Kyūjitai : 護 國 神社 , gokoku-jinja , dt. "Shrines for the defense of the country") are Shinto shrines in which soldiers and other military personnel are worshiped as kami who are involved in wars fell on the Japanese side. For this purpose, they are individually named in the registers of the respective shrines.

Up until a regulation by the Ministry of Home Affairs from 1939, these (approx. 110) shrines were mostly known as shōkonjō ( 招魂 場 , dt. "Places for the summoning of souls") or from 1875 uniformly as shōkonsha ( 招魂 社 , dt. "Shrines for the summoning of souls") known. They were originally built for those who had fallen into the turmoil of the Meiji Restoration from the late 1840s , mostly (or from 1875 only) loyalists on the side of the Tennō . Both private and public shōkonsha existed . The publicly managed shrines of the administrative districts, daimyates and prefectures were transferred to the administration of the central government in 1873/1874.

The first shōkonsha were built at the end of the shōgunate in the mid-1860s. In 1868 the construction of a national shōkonsha was ordered for all the soldiers who had died for Japan. This would later become the Yasukuni Shrine , which still fulfills this function today. He is also the only one of these shrines that ever received a rank ( shakaku ) in the official ranking system of the shrines at the time, although they all received financial support from the government according to their importance.

With the ordinance of the Interior Ministry in 1939, the shōkonsha were not only renamed gokoku-jinja , but also divided into designated and non-designated shrines. The shrines of the former class were chosen so that there was only one per prefecture . In principle, only Japanese from the respective prefecture belonged to the war dead worshiped therein.

After the end of World War II, the Gokoku shrines, like most other shrines, were reorganized as independent religious legal entities in the umbrella organization Jinja-Honchō .
