Takasaki ( Japanese 高崎 市 , - shi ) is a city in Gunma Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan , connected to Tokyo , Niigata and Nagano by the Shinkansen bullet train .
Significant branches of the economy are metal goods, electrical, silk and chemical fiber industries.
history
Takasaki was a castle town around the Takasaki Castle , as well as a post office ( 宿 場 町 Shukuba-machi ) of the Nakasendō during the Edo period.
Takasaki was elevated to an independent city ( shi ) on April 1, 1900 .
Attractions
Every year on January 6th and 7th, the largest Daruma market in the Kantō region takes place on the way to the "Dharma Temple on Shaolin Mountain" ( 少林 山 達磨 寺 , Shōrin-zan Daruma-ji ) . "Eyeless Daruma " ( 目 無 し ダ ル マ , menashi Daruma ) are sold at over 150 stands . The custom of drawing one eye on the purchased Daruma and promising that a second one will be drawn in for him after his wish has been fulfilled is particularly popular with politicians during election campaigns.
An important one of the syncretistic Shugendō religion is the Chōkoku-ji .
In Takasaki there is the Museum of Modern Art by the architect Arata Isozaki .
