The Jōetsu Line ( Japanese 上 越 線 , Jōetsu-sen ) is an important Japanese railway line. As part of the route network of the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) leads from the railway station Takasaki to Station Miyauchi in Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture and thus connects the northwest of the region Kantō with the coast of the Japanese sea in the region Chūbu .

Before the Jōetsu Shinkansen was opened in 1982 , the Jōetsu line maintained a dense high-speed rail service between Tokyo and Niigata . Today the route is mainly used by regional and freight trains.

The Jōetsu line was badly damaged by the Chūetsu earthquake in 2004, which caused the JR East to close the line for two months.

The Jōetsu-Shinkansen branch line between the stations Echigo-Yuzawa and Gala-Yuzawa (Gala-Yuzawa line) is procedurally part of the Jōetsu line.
