The Agatsuma Line ( Japanese 吾 妻 線 , Agatsuma-sen ) is a Japanese railway line that runs between Shibukawa and Ōmae stations in Gunma Prefecture . The line is operated by the East Japan Railway Company and is 55.6 km long.

history

The Agatsuma Line was originally opened in 1945 to transport ore from the mines of Gunma Prefecture as a private freight railway line of Nippon Kokan, KK. The first section to go into operation ran between Shibukawa and Naganohara stations. Consequently, the line was initially called the Naganohara Line. From 1946 a passenger service was gradually put into operation.

In 1954 the line was transferred to the state railway company of Japan, which operated passenger services from 1954. In 1963 the last ore mines in Gunma closed. As a result, freight traffic was stopped in 1966.

In 1971 the extension of the route from Naganohara to Ōmae was opened. The line was renamed the Agatsuma Line for the occasion.

The last station to open was Onogami-Onsen station in 1992. The route is now famous and popular for the large number of stops at well-known onsen baths.
