Midori ( Japanese み ど り 市 , -shi ) is a city in Gunma Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

history

Midori was created on March 1, 2006 through the merger of the parishes of Kasakake ( 笠 懸 町 , -machi ) of the district of Nitta , Ōmama ( 大 間 々 町 , -machi ) of the district of Yamada and Azuma ( 東村 , -machi ) of the district of Seta .

The archaeological excavation site Iwajuku, with the oldest evidence of human settlement in Japan to date, is located in the former Kasakake .
