Anthony Gilbert

Anthony Gilbert (born July 26, 1934 in London ) is an English composer and music teacher .

Life

Gilbert worked as a translator before studying music with Mátyás Seiber , then at Morley College with Anthony Milner and Alexander Goehr, and finally in Tanglewood with Gunther Schuller . In the 1960s he lived as a contemporary music editor in London before joining the University of Lancaster as a Granada Arts Fellow in 1970 .

He founded the Department of Contemporary Music at the Royal Northern College of Music and was Director of Composition Studies until his retirement in 1999. During longer stays in Australia he also headed the composition department of the New South Wales State Conservatorium .
