Maebashi ( Japanese written 前 橋 市 , Maebashi- shi ) is the administrative seat of Gunma Prefecture in the interior of Honshū , the main island of Japan . The university city of Maebashi is about 100 km north of Tokyo .
Economically, Maebashi is the center of the silk industry. The two Buddhist temples are a religious attraction.
history
Maebashi is an old castle town where a branch of the Matsudaira with an income of 150,000 koku last resided at Maebashi Castle.
On April 1, 1892, Maebashi was made an independent city ( shi ). In World War II Maebashi was destroyed three-quarters. In 1999 the World Indoor Athletics Championships took place here.
