Nobu Stowe

Nobu Stowe (* in Maebashi as Nobuyoshi Sutō ( 須藤 伸 義 , Sutō Nobuyoshi )) is a Japanese psychologist , music journalist , jazz pianist and composer living in the USA .

biography

Nobu Stowe is from the Japanese prefecture of Gunma . He had piano lessons at the age of three, and composition at six. As a teenager he played in a progressive rock trio called Pale Ghosts before moving to the United States after graduating. He studied music (composition) and psychology at the University of California at Berkeley and continued his studies at the University of Chicago , where he received a Ph.D. in 2002 for his research on a psychopharmacological topic. in psychology. He then moved to Baltimore to work in drug research for the National Institutes of Health . He is now working in this field at the University of Maryland .

In addition to this career, he founded the fusion band Trio Ricochet in Baltimore , with whom he performed at venues on the East Coast, such as the New York Knitting Factory and the Smithsonian Institution . In addition to this trio, Stowe worked in various projects, as a soloist and in duos, as well as with Blaise Siwula , Dom Minasi , Bern Nix and the tabla player Badal Roy . He plays in the Renaissance Trio with Andrea Centazzo and Perry Robinson , and in another trio he works with Barry Altschul . Since 2006 he has released a number of albums under his own name, mostly on the Soul Note label . On the album An die Musik , released in 2009 , he dealt with Keith Jarrett's improvisational attitude .

Stowe also writes jazz columns on a regular basis and conducts interviews (with Keith Jarrett, Michel Legrand , Gary Peacock and Bill Frisell, among others ) for the Japanese internet magazine Jazz Tokyo and American and European jazz magazines.
