Dave Ballou

Dave Ballou (* 22. April 1963 in Rhode Iceland ) is an American jazz - trumpet , flugelhorn player and composer and university teacher.

Live and act

Ballou studied at Berklee College of Music until 1986, after which he received his Masters at the University of New Hampshire in 1991 . His career as a musician began in the mid-1980s a. a. in the Either / Orchestra , with George Schuller , the Ken Schaphorst Big Band and with Paquito D'Rivera . In the early 1990s he played with Schuller, Tom Varner , Andy Laster , Chris Speed and others. a. in the formation Orange Then Blue . 1997 Ballou worked with the singer Judi Silvano ( Vocalise ); He also played on bassist Steve LaSpina's album When Children Smile and worked in Peter Herborn's orchestra ( Large One ). In 1999 he played in the Big Band of Kenny Werner ( Beauty Secrets ). In the late 1990s he played in Tom Varner's band ( The Window Up Above , 1998) and in the backing band of singer Mark Murphy . He also worked on Rabih Abou-Khalil's Enja production Cactus of Knowledge .

From 1997 Ballou recorded a number of albums for the Steeplechase label ; Contributors were u. a. Formanek, Tony Malaby , Cameron Brown , Tom Rainey and George Colligan . In 2003 he worked with Kevin Norton, John Lindberg and Tony Malaby ( Time-Space Modulator ). In 2007 he worked on Gunther Schuller's new performance of the work Epitaph by Charles Mingus . In 2018 he released the solo album Quadrants for Solo Trumpet (Pfmentum).

He also played on recordings with Cameron Brown, Satoko Fujii , Andrew Hill ( A Beautiful Day ), John Hollenbeck , Daniel Levin , David Liebman ( Beyond the Line ); Michael Musillami and Maria Schneider ( Alegresse , 2000).

The authors Richard Cook and Brian Morton highlight Ballou's clear and cool tone. His best album to date is The Floating World , created in December 1999 with pianist George Colligan .

Ballou is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Towson University, Maryland, where he is coordinator of the jazz / popular music division. He teaches jazz history, jazz theory and improvisation, jazz arrangement, jazz trumpet and jazz composition.
