Judi Silvano
Judi Silvano (born May 8, 1951 in Philadelphia as Judith Silverman) is an American jazz singer , composer and dancer.
Live and act
Silvano learned the flute, piano, ballet and modern dance before attending Temple University , where she graduated from music school in 1974. After a European tour with a ballet company, she settled in New York City in 1976 . There she took private lessons from Anne Marie Ross, Mark Murphy and Kirk Nurock . In 1980 she met Joe Lovano , whom she married in 1984. Together they founded The WinDance Ensemble , with whom they gave a series of music and dance concerts at Washington Square Church ; Kenny Werner , Bill Frisell , Joey Baron and Billy Drewes, among others , took part . During this time she also gave workshops for music and movement at the New School for Social Research .
In 1981 she brought Michael Bocian (with Kenny Werner ) to record for his album For This Gift . In 1987 she founded the JSL Records label with Lovano . After a European tour with Lovanos Wind Ensemble (with Bill Frisell , Tim Hagans and Paul Motian ; album Worlds ) she founded her first own vocal group Voices of Juniper in 1990 , with which she won first prize from the Brooklyn Lager Band Search for her arrangement of pieces by Ellington, Monks, Hadens and Harrells and own compositions won. In 1992 Dancing Voices was their first album as a band leader.
In the following years other albums and albums of his own were created together with Lovano. Since 1997 she has taught singing at Rutgers University ; the following year she participated in the Banff International Center for the Arts' Summer Jazz Workshop ; subsequently she also gave courses and workshops.
In 2000 Silvano undertook her first European tour as a band leader, where she recorded an album with Mal Waldron in Brussels . In 2001 she worked with the Muhlenberg College Dancers and the choreographer Susan Creitz on the project Travellin 'Without A Clue and worked with the guitarist James Emery . In 2002 she founded her second vocal ensemble Voices Together .
She has performed with Leanne Averbach and Golda Solomon at jazz and poetry concerts and has worked with musicians such as Dena DeRose and Scott Lee and the pianist Russ Lossing and took part in Bob Meyer's project Sephardic Meets Jazz (with Brad Shepik , John Menegon and Loren Stillman ). With Adam Kolker , Ben Allison and Gerry Hemingway she founded the quartet Cleome , with which she presented a live album in 2008 with a different line-up.
