Salvatore Bonafede (born August 4, 1962 in Palermo ) is an Italian jazz pianist.

Live and act

Bonafede learned to play the piano by himself at the age of four, and later he had classical piano lessons. From 1973 he studied at the Conservatory of Palermo; Occasionally during this time he performed with regional jazz groups and big bands.

A scholarship enabled him to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1986 to 1989 ; here he became a member of the quartet of Jerry Bergonzi , on whose Australian tour 1987/88 he took part; he also worked with Ricky Ford from 1987-89 . In 1989 he went to New York City, where he led his own groups and worked as a sideman with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra , Dewey Redman , Joshua Redman , Lew Tabackin and Pierre Vaiana ; with Joe Lovano he performed in the Town Hall .

From 1990 he worked in New York; his first albums appeared as a band leader. In addition, he took part as a freelance musician a. a. with Marc Johnson , Paul Motian , Paolo Fresu , Judi Silvano , Randy Brecker , John Abercrombie , Marvin Smitty Smith , Jerry Bergonzi, Tim Berne , Ralph Towner , Dave Douglas , Michael Formanek and Enrico Rava . Musica Jazz magazine voted him the top young player of the year in 1991 .

In 1994 Bonafede returned to Italy. He worked here with Lester Bowie , Tom Harrell and Bobby Watson and toured with John Scofield in 1995 . He then became a member of a band under Joe Lovano , with whom he took part in several European jazz festivals. He was also part of Myriam Alter's Where Is There project .

In addition, Bonafede composed film scores and music for television series and teaches at the Trapani Conservatory .
