history
Long before Europeans settled on the shores of Wellington Harbor , various Māori tribes lived around the natural harbor, most recently members of the Ngāi Tahu tribe . The bank of the alluvial land of the Hutt River was known as " Pito-one " since the beginning of the settlement by the Māori . In 1826 the first European settlers came to the natural harbor, which they called Port Nicholson , with Captain Herd . In January 1840 the settlement of British settlers followed via the New Zealand Company , who arrived with the Aurora and later with the Cuba . They landed on the banks of " Pito-one " and built their settlement there under the name " Britannia " . When the settlement area was flooded and the area proved too swampy, most of them abandoned the settlement project there and moved further south along the coast and settled where the city of Wellington is now. The few who stayed used the name Petone for their settlement.
Petone remained independent for a long time and was mainly shaped by its working class environment until the 1980s. It was the site of several large industrial operations, but most of them, including an automobile assembly plant and a meat processing company, closed in the 1980s, initially causing gradual economic decline. With the administrative reform of 1989 Petone lost its status as an independent parish and was merged with the adjacent town of Lower Hutt and the settlements of Wainuiomata and Eastbourne and formed into Lower Hutt City , now called Hutt City .
The history of the settlement of Petone is honored in a specially created museum, the Petone Settlers Museum , on the Esplanade.
