Frank Kimbrough

Frank Marshall Kimbrough (* 2. November 1956 in Roxboro , North Carolina ) is a pianist of modern jazz , that of Allmusic is emphasized because of its individual playing style.

Kimbrough comes from a musical family; After starting to play the piano at the age of four, he received piano lessons from the age of seven. After initially playing in churches and with local groups, he moved to Washington, DC in 1980 , where he led his own trio and performed with Webster Young and Buck Hill . The following year he settled in New York City , where he released his first album in 1986 (still on cassette). In 1992 he was a founding member of the Jazz Composers Collective with Ben Allison . In addition to Allison, he has directed The Herbie Nichols Project since 1994 . In addition to his trio, he also performed with his band Noumena , which included Ben Monder , Scott Robinson and Tony Moreno ; In 2008 he released a solo album with Air . From 1990 he worked with Ted Nash . Kimbrough also played with Paul Murphy , Diane Hubka, and Kendra Shank . Since 1994 he has also been a member of the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra . In 2011 he worked on Ryan Truesdells Centennial - Newly Discovered Works of Gil Evans .

Kimbrough teaches at New York University . In 1985 he won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition .
