Diane Hubka
Diane Hubka (born March 18, 1957 ) is an American jazz musician ( vocals , guitar ).
Live and act
Hubka was born and raised in Maryland; she first received violin lessons. At the age of eleven she switched to the guitar and learned to play fingerstyle from her mother, who sang in a folk band . In the 1970s her influences were Joni Mitchell , James Taylor and the Allman Brothers . She was introduced to jazz by her guitar teacher Bill Bittner at the College of Frostburg State University and joined his Frostburg Jazz Quartet as a singer .
Upon graduation, Hubka moved to Washington, DC, where she worked as a singer and performed in places like Blues Alley . In 1986, after winning a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Scholarship, Hubka moved to New York City to study with Anne Marie Moss . She also studied guitar and piano with Howard Alden , Gene Bertoncini , Harold Danko and Barry Harris . Connie Crothers became her mentor, and she took lessons from Sheila Jordan and Jay Clayton . For many years she performed with groups in the clubs of New York City and Washington, DC, and then joined herself on guitar as a singer in the 1990s.
Hubka recorded her debut album Haven't We Met? with Lee Konitz , Frank Kimbrough and John Hart . The album was in 1999 by the Jazz Journalists Association as Best Recording Debut of the Year nomination. She also worked with Frank Kimbrough and Harvie Swartz . Her album You Inspire Me was recorded with seven guitarists: Gene Bertoncini, Paul Bollenback , John Hart, Romero Lubambo , Bucky Pizzarelli , Frank Vignola and Jack Wilkins .
In 2004 Hubka moved to Los Angeles. The Sinatra Society of Japan invited her to concerts in Japan in 2007; the live album I Like It Here: Live in Tokyo was recorded by the Swing Journal for the renowned Jazz Disc Award . On their album West Coast Strings they supported the guitarists David Eastlee , Ron Eschete , Mimi Fox , Larry Koonse , John Pisano , Peter Sprague , Anthony Wilson and Barry Zweig .
