Barry Zweig (born February 7, 1942 in Detroit , † March 15, 2020 in California ) was an American jazz and studio musician ( guitar ) who was active in the Los Angeles music scene.

Live and act

Zweig began playing music at the age of four; at the age of 15 he discovered the guitar. His first recording session had at the age of 17 with Capitol Records . He toured with Buddy Rich and Sammy Davis Jr. , heard on their joint album The Sounds of '66 (Reprise). In the following years he was a member of the Buddy Rich Big Bandan ; he also worked in California with Leroy Vinnegar ( The Kid , 1976), further with Peggy Lee , Willie Bobo , Doc Severinsen , Ray Conniff , Henry Mancini , Andy Williams , Don Ellis and Abe Most .

With Bobby Shew , Tom Collier , Abraham Laboriel and Peter Donald Zweig recorded his only album Desert Vision (Jazz Chronicles) in 1977/78 . In the 1980s and 1990s he played a. a. in the big bands of Bill Holman , Ray Anthony and Charley Najar , with Frank Capp Juggernaut, in the Bill Elliott Swing Orchestra, in the Dave Pell Octet and in the bands of Herb Alpert ( Midnight Sun , 1992), Rick Poppe, Gene Estes , John Pisano ( Guitar Night ). In his later years he accompanied singers such as Keely Smith ( Keely Swings Basie-Style ... With Strings , 2002), Dinah Shore , Diane Hubka and Jackie Ryan ( This Heart of Mine ), as well as with Ron Kalina and Al McKibbon , Emil Richards and Paul Gormley.

In the field of jazz, Zweig was involved in 35 recording sessions between 1966 and 2014, according to Tom Lord , most recently with Sue Raney. In autumn 2019 he had his last appearance at the Lighthouse Cafe in Hermosa Beach . He died in mid-March 2020 as a result of complications from Crohn's disease .
