Peter Alexander Donald (* 15. May 1945 in San Francisco ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Peter Donald grew up in Woodside, California ; when he was 14 years old, his family moved to Boston . He had lessons there from 1964 to 1969 with Alan Dawson and studied from 1968 to 1970 composition at Berklee College of Music . From 1966 to 1958 he played in John LaPorta's Boston Youth Band ; He had his first professional job as a musician in 1965 at Red Norvo . He then lived in Los Angeles , where he accompanied Carmen McRae in 1972/74 ; then he was a member of the Toshiko Akiyoshi - Lew Tabackin Big Band until 1979 and worked a. a. on their album Insights . In Europe Donald was best known for his membership in the quartet of John Abercrombie , to which he belonged from 1978 to 1982, u. a. heard on the ECM albums Abercrombie Quartet , M and Arcade . In 1982 he played in the Warne Marsh and Gary Foster quintet ; 1985 with Denny Zeitlin and 1987 with Bob Florence . Most recently he was involved in productions by George Mraz and the Dave Pell Octet ( Sunday Afternoons at the Lighthouse Cafe , 2005).

Donald was also an entrepreneur in promotional music production and taught at the Grove School of Music from 1985. He wrote several textbooks on drumming.
