Challenge Records
Challenge Records was an American music label from the 1920s. Challenge later belonged to the American Record Corporation (ARC) and was marketed by Sears, Roebuck and Company .
history
Sears introduced Challenge Records to their product catalogs in the spring of 1927. With a price of 24 US cents, the label was considered one of the cheapest of the time. However, some of the appearances were even older master recordings from Gennett Records and Champion Records , which belonged to the Starr Piano Company . This company was also responsible for the production of the records. Almost all of the artists who pressed the challenge were published under pseudonyms. The quality of the recordings was worse than the average of the time, which was nothing special with the "low-budget labels" from Sears.
In 1929 the Scranton Button Company was commissioned with production. Again recordings from other record companies were used, but this time Banner Records , Oriole Records and Regal Records . From this point on, Challenge was associated with the American Record Corporation, as the Scranton Button Company was also part of ARC. Again, many artists were released under pseudonyms - with the exception of Ernest Stoneman and Jones & Hare , among others . The quality of the panels also remained poor.
ARC continued to run Challenge Records until 1931. The last records appeared in the spring of 1931.
